BOTOX® Cosmetic in San Diego
Over time, the aging process combined with environmental factors, such as gravity and sun exposure, can cause the face to develop fine lines and wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic and XEOMIN® are two of the most popular non-invasive cosmetic procedures that exist today and can eliminate these signs of aging. At his San Diego practice, Dr. Larry Pollack routinely performs BOTOX® Cosmetic and XEOMIN® injections to provide patients with smoother, more youthful skin.
BOTOX® Cosmetic Alternative: XEOMIN®
XEOMIN® is also a botulinum toxin A neuromodulator, which works exactly the same as BOTOX® Cosmetic. XEOMIN® is produced by another manufacturer (Merz Aesthetics), and it is offered as a less expensive alternative.
Am I a Candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic?
The best candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic and XEOMIN® injections are individuals with one or more of the following conditions:
- Forehead lines
- Lines on the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet)
- Creases between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
How Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Done?
BOTOX® Cosmetic and XEOMIN® injections are done on an outpatient basis and take just minutes to complete. Before BOTOX® Cosmetic or XEOMIN® is administered, a topical anesthetic or ice will be applied to numb the face. Dr. Pollack will inject the BOTOX® Cosmetic or XEOMIN® through a very fine needle into the areas of the face where lines and wrinkles exist. There may be mild discomfort during the injection, but this is normal and will only be temporary.
Your BOTOX® Cosmetic Consultation
When you meet with Dr. Pollack for your initial consultation and your preoperative visit, you will discuss your goals and concerns with him in detail, and he will customize the procedure to fit your needs and desires. Dr. Pollack will answer any questions you may have and make sure that you completely understand the benefits and risks associated with this procedure. BOTOX® Cosmetic and XEOMIN® are not meant to be permanent solutions for eliminating fine lines and wrinkles.
How Long Is My BOTOX® Cosmetic Recovery?
There is no downtime associated with BOTOX® Cosmetic nor XEOMIN®. Once the injections are complete, patients are to return to work and proceed with their normal activities. We do recommend that you avoid strenuous activity or bending for four hours following the injection. Some patients may experience mild redness at the injection sites, but this will fade in a day or two. Complications from BOTOX® Cosmetic or XEOMIN® injections are rare and usually very mild. Bruising can sometimes occur if the patient has been taking aspirin prior to the injections. Asymmetry can occur in the eyelids if the muscles are not stabilized enough. To obtain the most beneficial outcome, it is best to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon.
When Will I See My BOTOX® Cosmetic Results?
After BOTOX® Cosmetic or XEOMIN® is injected, it will begin working almost immediately. Over the next couple of days, patients will see their fine lines and wrinkles fade away. The injections usually last three to four months, at which time BOTOX® Cosmetic or XEOMIN® should be administered again to maintain results. For patients who want longer-lasting facial revitalization with just one procedure, a facelift or a brow lift may be more suitable.
How Much Does BOTOX® Cosmetic and XEOMIN® Cost?
The average cost of BOTOX® Cosmetic or XEOMIN® treatment is between $500 and $800, although the exact cost of the injections varies depending on how many areas will be treated.
Does Insurance Cover BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Unfortunately, in most cases, BOTOX® Cosmetic and XEOMIN® are not covered by insurance. However, in some instances, such as for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), insurance may cover the cost of injections.
Frequently Asked Questions About Neuromodulators
How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?
BOTOX® Cosmetic minimizes wrinkles by temporarily blocking nerve signals to specific muscles, thus immobilizing certain areas of your face. This process is not dangerous and will last only as long as the injectable’s effect.
How long do the results of BOTOX® Cosmetic last?
You can enjoy the smooth effects of XEOMIN® or BOTOX® Cosmetic injections for about three to four months. For some, the effects may start decreasing as early as two months after injection, though others experience effects for as long as six months. XEOMIN® and BOTOX® Cosmetic are not permanent solutions.
Over time, repeated injections can help prevent the development of new wrinkles. This is because the injections may train your muscles to avoid the larger movements that create static wrinkles. If you are seeking long-term solutions for a more youthful appearance, speak with Dr. Pollack about available options.
Are there things I should avoid after BOTOX® Cosmetic or XEOMIN® injections?
While there’s no downtime following XEOMIN® or BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, you should avoid certain activities for up to 24 hours. Avoid rubbing your face right away, and don’t lie face down until at least four hours after your injections. Give your face about six hours to absorb the medicine before washing it or using moisturizer. Over the 24 hours following your session, avoid strenuous exercise, don’t consume alcohol or blood thinners, and stay out of the sun (or protect your face with sunscreen and a hat). Tanning beds and heat lamps are also a no-no for about 24 hours.
What is a good age to start getting BOTOX® Cosmetic or XEOMIN® injections?
There is no “right” age for XEOMIN® or BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. It varies with the individual. If you notice fine lines and wrinkles that displease you at any age, schedule a consultation with Dr. Pollack for an evaluation to determine how BOTOX® Cosmetic may be able to help.
Do BOTOX® Cosmetic injections have side effects?
Potential side effects are typically mild and temporary. The injections may cause some discomfort, bruising, or swelling at the sites. Redness or a small amount of bleeding can occur. Less common effects are injection site infections, fevers, chills, and headaches. Side effects typically last about one to three days.
Is BOTOX® Cosmetic safe?
Yes, this procedure is safe. The FDA approved botulinum toxin Type A for cosmetic use in 2002. The department had previously approved these injections for medical purposes, such as migraine treatment.
