Men and women all over the world undergo facelift surgery to regain a youthful appearance. Visible signs of aging often appear on the face first because it is exposed to the sun and environmental stresses more than other parts of the body.

What Can a Facelift Address?

Patients typically consider facelift surgery when they are experiencing dissatisfaction with sagging skin, lines, creases, and loss of definition in the mid and lower face. A facelift can also address jowls to help define your jawline. Several facelift methods can be utilized depending on the extent of correction needed.

What Are the differences?

All facelift techniques involve the lifting and repositioning of facial muscles and tissues. Skin is also tightened, and any excess is trimmed away. The differences between a traditional facelift and a short scar lift come down to the incisions used and the extent to which they are able to treat aging concerns.

Traditional Facelift

The incisions for a traditional facelift start at the temples (usually hidden within the hairline) and continue down and behind the ears. This is performed on patients who require more extensive correction for their facial aging. While the recovery period will vary based on your body’s ability to heal, patients are typically able to return to work within seven days. Some minor swelling and bruising may still be visible but should dissipate within about four weeks. It is important to follow your doctor’s aftercare instructions to ensure a comfortable, smooth recovery.

Short Scar Facelift

This method can be used when the signs of aging are still relatively mild but require correction that can be done with non-surgical treatments. The short scar facelift uses a small incision that is made just behind the ear. This allows the scar to be concealed more easily; it also results in a shorter recovery period.

How Do I Decide?

While it is important to research so that you have an idea of what you want, a thorough consultation with your surgeon is the most important part of your decision-making process. During your consultation with Dr. Pollack, you will discuss your aesthetic goals and concerns as well as ask any questions you may have. You will also view before and after photos to get an idea of what to expect. Because facelift surgery can only address aging on the mid and lower face, you may also consider combining procedures with brow lift surgery or blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) to maintain a balanced look.
